Rey

Born in 1988 in Tehran, Iran, Rey lives and works in Berlin.

Born and raised in Tehran, Rey studied philosophy before moving to Vienna in 2014. She received her MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 2021. Her lived experiences and the social and cultural contexts in which she grew up have had an important influence on her artistic perspective. Her work often engages with ideas of resistance, women’s liberation, freedom of expression, memory, and identity. As a storyteller, Hosseini draws on lived experience and the relationship between the body, memory, and trauma. A strong sense of corporeality in her work is paired with strange and at times dreamlike scenes.

Her figures oscillate between beauty and ugliness, humor and anxiety, while retaining a sense of playfulness and emotional and philosophical depth. In recent years, alongside her life and work in Berlin, nature has taken on a more prominent presence in her paintings and become part of her visual language. Painting is a space in which personal experience, memory, migration, past, and present intersect.
