Born in Orwell's futuristic year of 1984, Marie Rosen is a Belgian artist based in Brussels, where her artistic journey began after graduating from the esteemed La Cambre art school. Deeply rooted in Belgian artistic traditions, her works draw inspiration from Flemish Primitive painters and the Surrealist movement. Painted on wood, copper, and paper, Rosen’s works capture a sense of estranged intimacy, as they depict the everyday world through a lens that feels both familiar and uncanny. Her paintings evoke the intriguing quality of ex-voto works, blending intricate geometric patterns inspired by the Art Deco interiors of her native city and the mid-century architecture of California. Though her scenes may appear to depict familiar moments, there is an inherent ambiguity—the viewer is never quite sure of what is happening, but is instead enveloped in a surreal atmosphere that speaks to the human experience. Rosen’s work transports us to a world that feels strangely known, yet undeniably enigmatic. Her works are held in prominent private collections across Europe and institutional collections within Belgium.
